ZEKO – WINGSPAN
High-energy party starters coexist amid contemplative interludes with ZEKO’s fiercely independent “WINGSPAN.” Production goes for a bright and buoyant stance. The sense of purpose is strong, letting the lyrics tell narratives about overcoming. It feels particularly relevant to this moment in time, when it is so easy to despair. Electro-pop, dance, slow jams, and funk are all filtered through a distinctive vision. What ties these many pieces together are the vocals, which have a yearning sense of desire that drives the point home. A great ear for melody further cements this spirit of liberation, breaking free of expectations and embracing pure freedom. Best taken in as a singular whole, the album is a living, breathing entity, perfect for pride.
Pure energy flows throughout. By accepting oneself, there’s a similar energy to some of Daft Punk’s carefree work. Much like their work, there’s a mix of funk and dance, alongside this sense of boundless possibility. A few of the tracks even feel reminiscent of Random Access Memories. The propulsive nature gives way to the hyperpop musings of Charli XCX’s Brat. Such a glossy scenario, and the polished perfection reveals a deeper heart within the work, one that simply wants community. Electro-pop elements recall the carefree attitude of Le Tigre’s work. By merging these many different aspects while keeping them up to date in the present, ZEKO develops a sound uniquely their own.
Great commanding chords and confident vocals start the album strong on “New Face,” which demands to be played at the loudest possible volume. “Dear Aaron” takes on a reflective stance, slowing the tempo in this thoughtful way. Arpeggios cascade downward as “Hide and Seek” features incredible hooks, serving as the highlight of the album in multiple ways. Infinitely catchy, the way that the narrative of self-discovery unspools gives the song an extra level beyond the pure sugar rush of the atmosphere. “Body Electric” features a fiery desire, going for this sense of pure lust. Layer upon layer comes into the fray on the confessional “Like Her.” A summer jam in a tropical vibe, “Santiago” has a laid-back disposition that completely lets loose. Compassion takes root on “Becoming (feat. Elara Anderson),” where the two vocalists create a conversational atmosphere. Neatly tying the album together strongly is the creative and hopeful “Butterfly.”
“WINGSPAN” presents powerful, positive dance music with a message, showcasing ZEKO’s ability to create a world that feels as warm and welcoming as the real world should be.
